The Derailleurs are heartbroken to announce our latest project: a ghost bike in honor of Yannick Nils Linke, killed by a car at Turk and Masonic on Friday evening. We’re always sad to hear of cyclist deaths, but this one hits particularly close to home: he was visiting from Vienna and was a friend of our dear pal Linnea.

If you’d like to help build the ghost bike or have broken parts to donate to it, email us at Watch this space for details on a memorial ride to dedicate the bike once it’s done.

To follow the story and the aftermath, including many efforts to fix the incredibly dangerous traffic situation on Masonic, try Bike NOPA, SF Citizen or SF Streetsblog.

Ride safe.

EDITED TO ADD: we’ve been beaten to the punch by persons unknown – a ghost bike was placed at Turk and Masonic last night. We are thinking of other ways to use the parts we’ve collected as a memorial – we have welding shop access, so perhaps we’ll take our time and make something elaborate. Props to the speedy and we’re glad to know others out there care too.

Without even trying, Yannick seemed to inspire people to seek the best in themselves, at least this is what he has done for me. I am heartbroken at his passing and appreciate deeply the
ghost bike construction that you are planning. I hope you will video tape the memorial ride for those
like me who never want to forget him.
